A familiar facsimile calls for help while hanging by a thread during a crises in the living room.
Wood, acrylic paint, wire, laser cut MDF | 12 x 10.75 x 3.5 inches (30.5 x 27 x 9 cm) | October 2020

The colorful background is made from craft sticks I used as paint stir sticks that I saved. I now have quite a collection of them that I incorporate into assemblage pieces now and then.

Old Constellation With New Idea I
Recycled wood, discarded bottle caps, nails, wire, chain, acrylic paint, paper | 23.5 x 16.5 inches (59.7 x 41.9 cm)

This is the first Old Constellation piece I did. The wood is a piece of old plywood that was used to ship artwork in. I found it at work by the trash bins.

Cayucos Lattice No. 1
Acrylic paint on laser cut plywood | 34 x 45 in (86 x 114 cm) | 2014

With good reason it seems most artists want to show only the best and successful work they do. This time I'm going show off some of my work that was quite unsuccessful at least in the public eye. These next few posts will be of pieces from my Cayucos Lattice series that were cut from .75 or .5 inch thick plywood and painted. I designed them all with Infinite Designer on my Galaxy tablet and rendered the outlines using the fabulous open source Inkscape app. I exported the Inkscape SVG files as dxf files to send to a commercial laser cutting service. I then painted the shapes with exterior/interior acrylic house paint. They were something I just had to have a go with. I only sold one of the smaller pieces and gave others away to family members after failing to sell any of them in several shows. I also kept a few for myself because I like them.

Cayucos Tiles No. 2
Acrylic painted tissue paper on wood panel | 12 x 12 x 1.5 inches (30.5 x 30.5 x 3.8 cm) | March 2021

This is one of a series of paintings where I cut shapes from tissue paper then carefully painted each shape. After the paint dried I glued each piece starting at the top of an unprimed wood panel using wood glue. Unlike most of the other paintings I do I coated it with varnish to help protect and seal the paper.

After the room was cleared, forgotten flapjacks and a hiding surprise were revealed.
Wood, acrylic paint, laminated paper, wire | 10 x 8 x 3.5 inches (25.4 x 20.32 x 9 cm) | June 2022

The flapjacks (pancakes) are made from circles of heavy paper laminated together with wood glue and painted. The ghost was made using the same lamination technique. I carved the light bulb from a piece of round dowel.

Bugged again by a temporary move. Yeah man. That's what it's all about.
Acrylic house paint on panel, wood, popsicle sticks, graphite, small nails |
10 x 10 x 1.5 inches (25.4 x 25.4 x 3.8 cm) | April 2023

I got the idea and inspiration for this one from Barnett Newman's Zip paintings and the film "Why Man Creates". :-D
