In honor of last week and the day’s origins in , I am sharing a bonus post focused the National World War I Museum and Liberty Memorial in . Here are some images for those who may not be able to visit in person.

This first image shows the exterior of the museum. The Liberty Memorial (tower) was dedicated in 1926 after a community-wide fundraising effort (started in 1919) to commemorate all who served in World War I. The museum itself, situated beneath the tower, opened in 2006. Their website has many videos and resources too: theworldwar.org/

A 271 foot tall tower rises in the center of the image, flanked on either side by a concrete building (parts of the museum) and a sphinx like statue using wings to cover it's face (from the horrors of war). Below the museum, which we can see the land slopes down towards the center of the image, is an entryway into the museum.

Happy Veterans Day.

Here's my father, West Point grad, during his time in Vietnam, where he was commanding officer of the 62nd Engineer Battalion (Const), which was converted to a Land Clearing battalion.

He was one of the few commanding officers who was also an immigrant from the Philippines.

Thank you to all the veterans out there, today and everyday.

Thinking especially of these guys, the Geary boys. The goofy Navy kid was my Dad, the youngest of 6 surviving sons (7 of 8 total). He had just turned 20 in that struting picture, taken December 1944.

Somehow they all made it home.

My Uncle Tommy was shot down over Holland and was missing almost 6 months, hiding from the Nazis with his crew. Uncle Frank was at the Battle of the Bulge & helped liberate a concentration camp. No one in the family, not even his brothers ever knew which one or what he saw. It affected him the rest of his life understandably.

My dad was at Iwo Jima and Okinawa where he got a piece of shrapnel in his head and was saved by a Marine who died a few moments later. I know he told me stories that a kid probably shouldn't have ever heard...but I know he held back a great deal. Even 50 years later, he couldn't watch war movies. But with his sense of humor he'd often say, "You know, I didn't win the war in the Pacific for this garbage!"
