The Raid on St. Nazaire (March 28, 1942) was a daring British attack on the Normandie dry dock in German-occupied France. The dock was crucial for repairing large German warships like the Tirpitz.
A modified destroyer, HMS Campbeltown, packed with explosives, rammed the dock gates while commandos sabotaged key infrastructure. Hours later, the hidden explosives detonated, destroying the dock and crippling German naval operations.
Though a strategic success, the raid came at a high cost — 169 British troops killed and many captured. The attack remains one of WWII’s boldest special operations, and it left Tirpitz limited to threatening Norwegian fjords before it was sunk by the RAF in 1944.
