knowing that one of the current tech policy advisors to gov't is an ex-director of policy at Tony Blair Institute, I'm certain what Blair is describing in this video will make it to the cut as proposition youtu.be/alnNJ3vR9qY

how a reasonable person can campaign for facial recognition – and pulling statistics how it led to more arrests as an argument, considering its proven racial bias – is baffling

🚨 The European Commission must act now to defend #FundamentalRights from Hungary's #PrideBan and the use of #FacialRecognition against protestors 🚨

✊🏾 EDRi, in a coalition of 24 CSOs, is calling on the Commission to ensure that the #HumanRights of #LGBTQIA+ people in #Hungary and beyond are protected. The organisers and people marching at hashtag#Pride in Budapest should be able to safely and peacefully assemble and protest 🏳️‍🌈

Of course the best answer (for a given definition of best) is to avoid the region and make it as unprofitable as practicable, while finding ways to support conventional policing and strengthen democratic institutions in other regions.

So it is therefore clearly on a completely unrelated note that I share this link to amusing printed masks of your favourite topical celebrities and politicians, (from a Chinese supplier, please do share a link to manufacturers in friendlier states, if anyone has one).

How the UK is shaping a future of Precrime and dissent management

Algorithms, facial recognition, and tightening protest laws signal a deepening surveillance state

"The UK is expanding its use of predictive policing and surveillance, framing it as a response to crime, protest, and public safety. But the direction is clear: more monitoring, earlier intervention, and more control over dissent.

In early April, The Guardian revealed that the Ministry of Justice is developing a “murder prevention” system. The tool aims to identify individuals judged to be at high risk of committing lethal violence, based on data drawn from multiple agencies—social care, policing, education. The government has framed the project as a research initiative to improve risk assessments and early intervention. But its underlying logic marks a shift toward ‘precrime’—managing individuals on the basis of what they might do, rather than what they’ve done."
