Could you imagine if #auspol used VSL value-of-statistical-life (currently valued at $5.3 million per normal person) based approach in #housing policy areas as they do in infrastructure?

Sensible move really when you consider the #homeless die at almost twice the rate as those who are housed.

Apparently #mortality isn’t considered ethical.

Here is a quick little hypothetical mock-up I made - and as you can see - I kept receipts...

I created a quick table and analysis to compare a hypothetical policy change in Australia if the government adopted a Value of a Statistical Life (VSL) approach when assessing the return on investment (ROI) and cost-effectiveness of preventing homelessness. A table with four columns: 'Policy Area', 'Current Approach', 'VSL-Based Approach', and 'Implications'. The table compares funding for social housing, homelessness services, and rental assistance. For social housing, the current approach is a $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund aiming for 40,000 homes by 2029. The VSL-based approach requires $21.2 billion to save 4,000 lives, using a 2024 VSL of $5.7 million. The implication is that current funding covers less than 50% of the VSL-justified need. For homelessness services, the current approach sees over 50,000 people turned away annually due to capacity limits. The VSL-based approach to prevent 1,000 deaths (suicide/overdose) would require $5.7 billion. The implication is that existing programs are 10 times under-resourced by VSL standards. For rental assistance, the current approach involves a 15-25% Commonwealth Rent Assistance (CRA) boost to reduce poverty but does not address mortality. The VSL-based approach to raise CRA by 60% to prevent 383 deaths per year would need $2.2 billion per year. The implication is that current increases of $500 million per year fail VSL cost-benefit thresholds.

We did a software experiment today 👨‍🔬🧪⚗️

I gathered 11 people to test during 2h our #lowcode platform BESSER as part of a #user #study.

During these 2h they had to "play" with the tool. They could #test any aspect of the tool (the #code generators, the web modeling #editor , the #OCL interpreter,...) and report all the issues (bugs but also feaures they felt were missing).

This was also a way to make sure everybody gained some experience with the tooling as some were only familiar with specific components.

I'm very happy with the result. We all learned a lot about what people expected from the tool. And as a result, we opened #70 new #issues 👏👏👏

Our next 🧪⚗️ will be to see how many of these 70 can be automatically fixed with an #AI #assistant 🤔. We'll first a triaging of those that are #goodfirstissues and start with those.

Later, we'll repeat the experience with the BESSER Agentic Framework

And, honestly, if you're developing a tool, try it with yours. I really think it's one of the actions with better #ROI you could do
