MILITARY LAW CLE: March 20th, 5pm
Presented by NLG-Bay Area Military Law Panel
How Can You Help Military Dissenters Resist the Trump Agenda?

One hour of free MCLE Credit for California Attorneys

Date: Thursday March 20th, 5-6 pm
Location: Zoom nlgsf.ourpowerbase.net/civicrm

Trump and Musk can give orders, but they rely on a compliant military to enforce their agenda. Historically, service members are often outspoken leaders of resistance and refuse orders which compromise their moral integrity. They seek legal assistance from the Bay Area Military Law Panel (BAMLP), the local working group of the Military Law Task Force (MLTF) of the National Lawyers Guild. to understand both the consequences of dissent and how to separate from the military. We expect an increased need for legal counsel as service members are ordered to carry out deportation policies, suppress domestic protest, and enforce the administration’s global agenda.

This program will be an overview for lawyers, law students, legal workers, counselors and medical care providers who want to advise and represent active-duty personnel who engage in protest activities, speak out against illegal or immoral policies, or resist illegal orders.

No prior military law experience necessary. Veterans welcome. No court litigation expected.

Facilitator: Jane Kaplan, Esq., Pro bono military lawyer

From the article: “The cruel irony is that thousands of transgender servicemembers have sacrificed—some risking their lives—to ensure for others the very equal protection rights the Military Ban seeks to deny them.”

From the article: "Veterans have had help from the Department of Veterans Affairs adjusting to work-life challenges for years. But employees at the department’s suicide crisis line and other workers who manned the phones were among those recently laid off in a purge of the federal government workforce.

"More than 2% of the VA’s probationary workforce was dismissed in recent weeks. Stephen Machuga, founder and CEO of Stack Up, the military-focused charity centered around a shared love of video games, isn’t sure how that’s going to shake out."

From the article: "On January 27, 2025, with the stroke of a pen, thousands of military careers were slated for termination. That was the day President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning transgender individuals from serving in the military. This order was not only severe in its scope but alarmingly rushed in its execution and callous in its treatment of service members who have devoted their lives to protecting our nation.

"Despite rhetoric suggesting this policy allows for nuance, the reality is absolute. The Department of Defense has abandoned any pretense of "grandfathering" transgender service members, many of whom have been serving honorably since first permitted to openly serve in 2017. These individuals—who meet all military requirements, are deployed worldwide, and serve with distinction—are now labeled unfit based on a characteristic that has nothing to do with their abilities or performance.

"This abrupt reversal represents an extraordinary betrayal of trust. Service members who came forward, often at great personal risk, under previous assurances from military leadership that they could serve as transgender troops, now face involuntary separation. As the United States Secretary of the Navy, and during my own military service, I committed to an institution that prided itself on never leaving anyone behind. Yet thousands of transgender service members are now being abandoned without regard for their years of effective and dedicated service."

"On Saturday, US army Maj Gen Charles Calvin Rogers’s Medal of Honor webpage led to a “404” error message. The URL was also changed, with the word “medal” changed to “deimedal”.

Rogers, who was awarded the Medal of Honor by then president Richard Nixon in 1970, served in the Vietnam war, where he was wounded three times while leading the defense of a base."
