Headline: "Spokane City Council Moves to Affirm LGBTQ+ Rights Amid Federal Rollbacks"

Source: @kxly4news

From the article: "SPOKANE, Wash. -- As the federal government rolls back LGBTQ+ protections, the Spokane City Council is taking steps to further safeguard the rights of the local LGBTQ+ community.

"During Monday's agenda review meeting, councilmembers debated an ordinance, proposed by Councilmember Paul Dillon, which aims to affirm the LGBTQ+ community's already existing rights.

"Dillon's proposals include affirming the right to seek gender-affirming care and maintaining an LGBTQ+ liaison officer within the Spokane Police Department to collaborate with the community."

From the article: "Annual Pride celebrations across the country have become a staple of their communities, and nearly 10% of American adults now identify as LGBTQ+. With big corporations eager to provide visible financial support to the LGBTQ+ community, these celebrations have become bigger, flashier and emblazoned with company logos.

"But this year, amid the Trump administration’s crackdown on diversity and equity efforts and a torrent of legislative attacks on the LGBTQ+ community, Pride organizers around the nation are facing a decline in sponsorships and visible corporate support.

"Scrambling to fill the gap in funding, these groups are leaning on grassroots fundraising efforts and returning to that original spirit of resistance. This year, the organizers say, simply showing up will send an important message."

From the article: "In 2018, Charlie Sprinkman was working for an organic beverage company, a job that required them to travel to 42 states. But along the way, they struggled to find LGBTQ+ hangouts. The solution came to them while they were driving home from Brave Trails, a youth LGBTQ+ leadership summer camp where they were a counselor: They’d create Everywhere Is Queer, a digital map of queer-owned businesses.

"Launched in January 2022 with a website and social media presence, Everywhere Is Queer has grown to a directory of over 13,000 LGBTQ+-owned brick-and mortar and online businesses, services and community groups across the globe. Since February, a mobile app has been available on iOS and Android with over 80,000 downloads and many more resources, including a job board with LGBTQ+ and ally-owned businesses looking to hire. "New York Governor Andrew Cuomo stepped down from office in October 2021 amidst rampant allegations of sexual misconduct and the apparent mishandling of nursing home deaths during the COVID shutdowns. From the article: "On January 27, 2025, with the stroke of a pen, thousands of military careers were slated for termination. That was the day President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning transgender individuals from serving in the military. This order was not only severe in its scope but alarmingly rushed in its execution and callous in its treatment of service members who have devoted their lives to protecting our nation.

"Despite rhetoric suggesting this policy allows for nuance, the reality is absolute. The Department of Defense has abandoned any pretense of "grandfathering" transgender service members, many of whom have been serving honorably since first permitted to openly serve in 2017. These individuals—who meet all military requirements, are deployed worldwide, and serve with distinction—are now labeled unfit based on a characteristic that has nothing to do with their abilities or performance.

"This abrupt reversal represents an extraordinary betrayal of trust. Service members who came forward, often at great personal risk, under previous assurances from military leadership that they could serve as transgender troops, now face involuntary separation. As the United States Secretary of the Navy, and during my own military service, I committed to an institution that prided itself on never leaving anyone behind. Yet thousands of transgender service members are now being abandoned without regard for their years of effective and dedicated service."

From the article: "On March 4, Arkansas lawmakers introduced HB1668, the Vulnerable Youth Protection Act, a sweeping bill that would criminalize support for the social transition of transgender youth. The bill allows parents to sue anyone who affirms a child’s gender identity, defining social transition broadly as “any act by which a minor adopts or espouses a gender identity that differs from the minor’s biological sex… including without limitation changes in clothing, pronouns, hairstyle, and name.” It also serves as a total ban on youth gender-affirming care, prohibiting both surgeries and hormone therapy for transgender minors. But the bill goes even further: it asserts extraterritorial jurisdiction, meaning lawsuits could be brought against people outside of Arkansas if they are deemed to have helped a transgender child transition. The penalties are staggering—minimum damages of $10,000 per defendant, with punitive damages reaching up to $10 million for those involved in medical care."
