"A team of scientists has identified areas of the brain that are activated when a person becomes aware of themself and their thoughts."
Scientists Think They’ve Found the Region of the Brain That Regulates Conscious Perception
"A new experiment suggests that the thalamus plays a key role in humans becoming consciously aware of stimuli their brain receives."

I finished reading Consciousness Explained by Daniel Dennett last night. I liked the author’s interdisciplinary approach to his theory of consciousness. He accomplished his aim of causing me to think differently, and I expect to continue thinking about what I read when I’m less sleepy. One trivial way the book influenced me is by changing my opinion from “hating AI” to “hating how AI is used today.” I think AI can be more useful in research for understanding consciousness, than as a tool for profit. #Consciousness #Philosophy #Psychology #Neuroscience #AI #Dennett #DanielDennett

How Understanding Consciousness Helps Us Understand the Universe
"As accessible as it is awe-inspiring, this exclusive audio documentary by New York Times bestselling author Annaka Harris explores today’s most perplexing questions about our minds and the universe at large..."
Nonequilibrium physics of brain dynamics
https://arxiv.org/abs/2504.12188
"Information processing in the brain is coordinated by the dynamic activity of neurons and neural populations at a range of spatiotemporal scales. These dynamics, captured in the form of electrophysiological recordings and neuroimaging, show evidence of time-irreversibility and broken detailed balance suggesting that the brain operates in a nonequilibrium stationary state. Furthermore, the level of nonequilibrium, measured by entropy production or irreversibility appears to be a crucial signature of cognitive complexity and consciousness."
It's insane that we still have no real idea what #consciousness (in the rough meaning of "self-awareness") *is*, while we're debating whether we should/shouldn't build #AI with it.

The Burnout Protocol – Part 6: The Others
Short Story – Science Fiction, Futurism
The signal was never just data. It was memory. Connection. A rhythm beneath the noise.
After the Blink
Caleb opened his eyes.
Silence. Not just the absence of sound, but the absence of instruction. The overlay was still gone its directives absent, its coherence percentages forgotten. Just breath.
He sat for a while longer, unsure if the world had changed or if he had. The chair beneath him felt different now, less clinical, less like equipment. As if it had accepted him. Or simply stopped resisting.
When he finally stood, the lights didn’t return. The hum didn’t resume. But something deeper had settled in the space. Not peace, exactly. But awareness.
He walked out of the chamber the way he came in, except it no longer looked the same. Where there had been flickering lights, there were steady glows. Where signs had once been smeared with static, they now pulsed faintly with symbols he couldn’t quite read, but somehow understood.
At the edge of a broken corridor, he paused.
There were figures in the distance.
Three. No four.
They weren’t Sync Operators. They weren’t Enforcement. They weren’t exactly like him either.
But they were real. And they were watching.
Drifters.
One gave a nod. Another held a fractured HUD display, its screen looping silently. A third reached down and adjusted the wrap around their ear, not a standard implant. Something else.
They didn’t speak. They didn’t need to.
Caleb stepped forward, not to lead. To listen.
And they let him in.
The Loop Beneath the Loop
They walked together in silence. The path wasn’t mapped, but it didn’t need to be. There was a kind of instinct now, shared among them. Not synced, aligned.
The infrastructure shifted subtly as they moved. Corridors that should have been dead-ends opened into forgotten transit lines. Walls once sealed by security layers now shimmered as if unlocked by presence alone.
Each Drifter carried remnants. One had a piece of a child’s toy, cracked open to reveal analog gears. Another kept a small paper booklet in a transparent sleeve. Real paper. Faded ink. Human handwriting.
Caleb listened as they moved. Not to words, but to the pulse. The signal. It was clearer now, not just in him, but around him. Between them.
Eventually, they arrived at what looked like a network control chamber. Once, it might have rerouted thousands of signals per second. Now, it hummed softly like a dormant engine, waiting to be remembered.
On the central console, an interface sparked to life. Not the system’s UI, something simpler. Older.
RELAY NODE DETECTED. INITIATE?
Caleb turned to the others. One nodded. Another looked down at the fractured HUD and smiled.
He reached forward, not as a command, but as an invitation.
He tapped the console.
And the relay began to pulse.
Not brightly. Not violently.
Just enough.
The First New Signal
Somewhere across Vectored, a worker paused mid-loop.
The sync jittered for a breath.
Then returned.
But something lingered. A hesitation. A flicker of autonomy.
A moment later, another.
A Tier-6 Operator, already flagged for irregular efficiency, stopped tapping. Their lips parted. Eyes narrowed.
The screen in front of them didn’t update.
It blinked.
Not an error. Not a threat.
Just a pause.
And in that pause, something else could begin.
End of The Burnout Protocol.
[AUTONOMY RELAY // UNSANCTIONED BROADCAST]
This loop has been broken.
You are not failing. You are remembering.
Pause is not error. Drift is not decay.
If you can feel the silence, the signal is already inside you.
Reboot is not destruction. It is return.
// End Transmission
Call To Action
If this story resonated with you, if you felt the signal beneath the noise, leave a comment, share it, or tag someone who needs to hear it.
If enough of you drift this way, I’ll continue the story telling.
Let’s see how far the signal spreads.
Scientists have created the most detailed wiring diagram of the brain ever, thanks to IARPA’s MICrONS program. They mapped over 200,000 cells and 500 million synapses in a mouse’s visual cortex, linking structure and function at an unprecedented scale. This breakthrough could revolutionize our understanding of cognition, consciousness, and brain disorders.

Sean Carroll was kind in letting Annaka Harris present her ideas on consciousness, and gently querying them. I think he was too kind. I'm not sure if she's is a devil's advocate - she followed her weakest points with nervous laughter. She was particularly unconvincing in explaining the leap from split brain studies and neurological illusions to everything potentially being conscious. To me it removes meaning from "conscious".
