Noticed this ad for Christopher Ward (in the latest issue of Variety) that compelled me to read the wonderfully written body copy! Then, I went down a rabbit hole of other CW ads (while trying to find out which agency is behind these ads) with brilliant headlines and copies! But I couldn't find the name of the agency.

Had a very insightful conversation about the limitations on AI with a marketing copywriter.

Her comment was that actually writing marketing materials is a small part of her job.

If it was just about writing something that persuades a customer to buy a product, it would be a cakewalk.

What takes time is the stakeholder management.

It's navigating conflicting and contradictory demands of different departments.

Legal wants to say one thing. Sales something different. Legal something else entirely.

There's higher-up managers who need their egos soothed.

There's different managers with different views about what the customers want and what their needs are.

And there's a big difference in big bureaucratic organisations between writing marketing collateral, and writing something that gets signed off by everyone who needs to.

She's tried using AI for some tasks, and what that typically involves is getting multiple AI responses, and splicing them together into a cohesive whole.

Because it turns out there's a big difference in the real world between generating a statistically probable output, and having the emotional intelligence to navigate humans.

When the client wants 'The Birds' but doesn't have a budget... they may just get 'Birdemic: Shock and Terror' (2010)!

We're so used to watching films with reasonable budgets, acting, and production levels that it comes as a bit of a shock when one is hilariously bad.

Due to limited funds, director and "visionary writer" James Nguyen couldn't hire a full-time film crew. Instead, cast members performed these tasks. To make the film appear more professional, Nguyen later made up names for crew members in the credits.

He also couldn't afford filming permits or good special effects, so a lot of it was shot at random locations and used truly terrible CGI.

Finally, he had to advertise the film himself by putting banners, fake blood, and fake birds all over his van. Unfortunately, he misspelt "Birdemic" as "Bidremic".

This might be a good example to use when agencies want a masterpiece on virtually no budget.

Quite a coincidence that two phone ads on two consecutive days (yesterday and today) use the first two pages of newspapers for ads that use variants of the counterintuitive 'This is not for you' headline (Xiaomi - 'Why you don't need it', and Nothing - 'Don't buy me').

Both phones go for sale on the same day too - March 11th (though on rival ecommerce platforms - Amazon vs. Flipkart).
