Marvel Adds 'Thunderbolts' Series With Crazy New Roster—Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors

"Thunderbolts\*" is the next blockbuster coming out of the gate for Marvel Studios, and as the team makes it to the big screen the comic book version is getting a major makeover. Marvel Comics will release the first issue of "New Thunderbolts" in June, featuring a brand new volatile line-up including the likes of Hulk, Wolverine, and even Carnage.

The Winter Soldier. Black Widow. Carnage. The Hulk. Namor. Clea. Wolverine.

A new era of #MarvelComics' most lethal super team begins in a new ongoing series, 'New Thunderbolts\*' by @samhumphries and @tonlima\_19, coming this June. 🧵 ⬇️

The complete line-up of "New Thunderbolts" is the Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Wolverine (the Laura Kinney version), Hulk, Namor, Clea, and Carnage (the new Eddie Brock version). Winter Soldier and Black Widow are the only members who aren't complete newcomers to the team.

"New Thunderbolts" will be written by Sam Humphries with interior art by Ton Lima and cover art by Stephen Segovia.

Not only is this line-up more volatile than most Thunderbolts teams, it's one of the most power-heavy in the history of the group. Their power is apparently necessary. Bucky and Black Widow assemble the team after the Marvel Universe is threatened by doppelgangers of the Illuminati - a once secret group of superheroes who manipulated things behind the scenes.

To come up with his version of the Thunderbolts, Humphries said he "imagined a dangerous, disastrous, unhinged Marvel dinner party, and went with that."

Demented duplicates of the Illuminati are threatening the world, and Bucky and Natasha need allies who will do anything to take them out. But wrangling a team of killers and monsters presents its own dangers.

In a press release from Marvel, Humphries went on to say, "I love every iteration of 'Thunderbolts.' I'm thrilled to continue the franchise's proud tradition of hard hitting action, powder keg personalities, and explosive surprises into a new era. This is a gang of seven of the biggest badasses and loose cannons from different corners of the Marvel Universe."

Fans shouldn't be surprised if the members of this "New Thunderbolts" line-up end up trading blows with one another as much as they do the bad guys. Hulk and Namor in particular are not known for getting along well with other heroes. The last time the two of them were in a team together was the early aughts "Defenders" series, and they tended to start fistfights with one another at least every other issue.

The biggest question fans should have is exactly how Bucky and Black Widow manage to convince these volatile heroes to actually work together.

"New Thunderbolts" #1 hits shelves June 11. Meanwhile, "Thunderbolts\*" is scheduled to release in theaters a little over a month earlier, on May 2.
