Wilkes Land crater: The giant hole in East Antarctica's gravitational field likely caused by a meteorite

Researchers have proposed many origins for a gravity anomaly in Wilkes Land, East Antarctica, but the latest evidence suggests the subglacial hole is an impact crater measuring 315 miles across.

I have this emotional support pendant, made of a small piece of meteorite.

I sometimes hold it in my hand and say to it: “You travelled vast distances through space. You know our silly little planet and our troubles here don't matter in the grand scheme of things.” And I feel a bit better.

Weird? Probably. Pathetic? Most likely. But it works and I'll take whatever does these days.

NWA 2137, an unequilibrated LL3.7 chondrite #meteorite that has a dark inclusion and a ton of chondrules of all types.

The meteorite landed close to Drummondville, Que., March 2, 2025. It was detected by the DOMe meteor observation network, a series of cameras deployed by Montreal’s Planetarium in the St. Lawrence Valley.
