The Trump administration’s use of an alternative non-official means of communication which ultimately led to a serious security breach has caused much outrage, and etymologically this is appropriate. Surprisingly, the word outrage is related to neither the word out nor the word rage. Outrage came into English ca. 1300 from Old French outrage “harm, damage; insult; criminal behavior; presumption, insolence, overweening”, which had the earlier form oltrage, coming from Vulgar Latin *ultraticum “excess”, from Latin ultra “beyond”, made up of Old Latin uls “beyond” + the suffixes -ter and -a. This root also had the superlative adjective form ultimus “last, final, farthest, most distant, extreme”, which was the basis of the verb ultimare "to be final, come to an end”, with the past participle ultimatus giving us English ultimate in the 1650. Latin ultra and ultimus can be traced back to Proto-Indo-European *ol-s and *ol-tero-, suffixed o-grade forms of the root *al- meaning “beyond”, which when combined with the suffix -tero- producing the form *al-tero- “other of two”, also came into Latin as alter “the other (of the two)” and alternus “one after the other, alternate, in turns, reciprocal”, as well as the verb alternare "do one thing and then another, do by turns”, with the past participle alternatus leading to Medieval Latin adjective alternativus that came into English in the 1580s as alternative.

@ExtentOfTheJam I have fond memories of this game. I played it a lot and was reasonably quite good (I'm not a good gamer for most games), even blowing up the base a few times.
