Edgartown Harbor Lighthouse, 2/17/2024. This was our third stop on our Martha’s Vineyard trip last year. This cast iron lighthouse was originally built in 1881 and served as a rear range light on Crane’s Beach in Ipswich, Massachusetts, but was dismantled and moved to Edgartown Harbor when the hurricane of 1938 destroyed the lighthouse that had stood there since 1828. Today, it is managed by the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, and while still an active aid to navigation, it is the centerpiece of a Children’s Memorial to remember and honor children from around the world who have passed: the children’s names are carved in granite cobblestones that are placed into the foundation of the lighthouse. It is a very accessible lighthouse that, in the warmer seasons, is open for tours. We visited in the heart of the off season, so we were able to admire it from the outside only. The pictures don’t do it justice: it is an incredibly beautiful spot.

East Chop Lighthouse, 2/17/2024. This was the second stop on our Martha’s Vineyard trip last year. The East Chop Lighthouse sits in the center of a little park overlooking the entrance to the Vineyard Haven Harbor. Unlike the West Chop Lighthouse, we could walk right up to it, and because it was February, no one else was around and we had it to ourselves. According to lighthousefriends.com, it was originally painted white, but for about a hundred years it was painted reddish-brown and was often referred to as the “Chocolate Lighthouse.” It was only in 1988 that it was again painted white — good call, IMO.

West Chop Lighthouse, 2/17/2024. My wife and I took a day trip to Martha’s Vineyard last year and hunted four of the island’s five lighthouses. First stop was the one closest to the ferry, West Chop Lighthouse, which is an active USCG station. The light snow was a nice touch. The last photo is of a U.S. Lighthouse Establishment marker that I noticed by the fence of the property.

Nobska Light, Woods Hole, MA: 8/21/2024. Photos of the lighthouse interior that I took during the twilight tour that I enjoyed last summer.

Photo 1: The spiral staircase leading up to the lantern room.
Photo 2: View from the top. Note the lighthouse-shaped finial.

Nobska Light, Woods Hole, MA: 8/21/2024. I’ve visited Nobska many times, but this was the first time I had the chance to climb it. This was a “twilight tour” of the lighthouse, and our tour guide was great: very friendly and informative. This was also the first time I was able to visit the Keeper’s House, which was recently renovated and looks fantastic.

Pretty weird.

Cape Elizabeth Lighthouses, Cape Elizabeth, Maine, 4/11/2024. These twin lights were both built in 1874. I visited Two Lights State Park once before, many, many years ago, and I recall it was difficult to get a good view of either of them. It’s even more overgrown today, and the lighthouses are now not visible at all from the park; but you can get a fine view (of the east tower at least) at the end of Two Lights Road. The east tower is widely familiar, thanks to Edward Hopper’s paintings, most notably “The Lighthouse at Two Lights.” It is still in use as an active aid to navigation and the optic is maintained by the USCG. The residence is privately owned. The west tower was discontinued as a lighthouse in 1924. During WWII the lantern room was removed and the tower was converted into a lookout post. The west tower and residence are now both privately owned.

3.) The decommissioned west light, now used as a fire lookout, viewed from Two Lights Terrace. Kinda reminds me of an Imperial Stormtrooper from Star Wars 🤷🏻‍♂️
