Heard on the news now: "About 500 000 South Africans pay about half of the #tax in the country."
That's... pretty shocking. It explains why our tax rate is so high, and rising. And it also makes sense why they want to raise #VAT, because everyone pays VAT, even those who don't earn enough to pay income tax.
The thing is, a VAT increase is inarguably going to hit the poor way harder than anyone else. :/ #SouthAfrica

There’s an awful lot being read into the fact that a dumb prediction about adding #VAT to school fees didn’t come true. In short:
Private schools aren’t about getting better schooling, they’re about making sure that your offspring mixes with the kids you want them to.
The rise put pressure on the less well funded private schools, some of which have closed, and the kids were (mainly) sent to the richer ones.
Congratulations. You got some tax and increased the cachet of private schooling
While critics including the former chancellor Jeremy Hunt had predicted that up to 90,000 children could flood the state sector if VAT of 20% was charged, most councils say they have seen no impact from the policy in applications to start at state secondary schools later this year.
These are relatively rich people. Perhaps foregoing the third annual foreign holiday?

VAT Group a sans grande surprise étoffé sa rentabilité l'an dernier. L'équipementier st-gallois de pompes à vides, qui avait déjà fourni de premières indications à ce titre début janvier, a dégagé un bénéfice net de 211,8 millions de francs, 11,3% de plus qu'un auparavant.
