A moment of connection where Huni Kuin women, gathered inside the ceremonial maloca, share stories and prepare for an ayahuasca ceremony. Some journeyed days by river to be here. There is no shaman and no healing without a community to support.

I watched (listened) this talk at the gym, on the opposition between #indigenous #healing #traditions and western #medicine.
It's a honest presentation and touches on topics such as cultural appropriation and colonialism. The answer lies in reconciling these 2 approaches so they work together.

Throwback to when we were helping our Huni Kuin hosts in the preparation of ayahuasca. The scraping of the vine bark is a communal activity in which everyone participates regardless of background. What many outsiders don't realise is that while the medicine work is profound, the ceremony itself resembles a vibrant party by nightfall, full of songs, stories, and a collective journey.

The ayahuasca has cooled down and is ready. It's around 8pm, the ceremony will start soon, the medicine man has already set up the altar in the maloca. Sacred and meaningful objects are placed in its centre (tobacco, feather fans, containers, icons...).

I can feel nervousness and excitement in my belly.

@Yehuda The same has happened to the #Bufo toad in Mexico.
Same has happened to the rarer varieties of #Ayahuasca vine in Peru.

All the while we could produce mescaline, 5-meo-dmt, dmt & tetrahydroharmine synthetically, leaving these fragile ecologies alone.

But then we have the fucking ’natural health’ wanna-be white ”shamans” taking none of it, because it’s not ”spiritual”.

Fucking #psychedelic #colonialism
White privilege all the way through 🤮
