Agh. Just got shivved for a day of data roaming (which used to cost $8 per day and now, for some reason, most likely "pure greed", costs $16 per day)
Knowing I already had roaming enabled, I left the phone in airplane mode after getting off the plane because I knew, as soon as the phone connected to the phone network, I would get dinged whether I use it or not
So I just spent a little time trying to work out how I could disable data roaming without accidentally incurring a cost given that all the mobile network settings are disabled while in airplane mode
I tried asking a couple of search engines, but all the answers were useless, even the few seemingly sincere results I found amidst the reams of ad-driven generative model garbage (please reserve a few thoughts and prayers for the poor SEO con-artists currently being driven into remission by robots)
Then I realized I had a physical and therefore removable SIM, so I took it out. This let me turn off airplane mode and also to access more mobile network settings, yay. Unfortunately the "data roaming" setting lives with the SIM settings so by removing the SIM, I couldn't change that setting, boo
Brainwave. I found a "data saving" feature that allowed me to disable all apps from using any mobile networks, yay
Unfortunately, while the "data" in "data roaming" refers to all functions of the phone including calls and SMS, the "data" in "data saving" refers to everything except calls and SMS. So the moment I plugged the SIM back in, I got a message from the bastards at Telus to tell me what a pleasure it was to gouge me yet again
So I'm going to switch off Wi-Fi for the rest of the day, max my data plan and then take out the SIM for the rest of my vacation
