A few days late but today was the last inside day for our teenagers. They are in a makeshift isolation area in the chicken run to get acclimated to outside and the old ladies.

That's Miss Adventure and Miss Anthropic about to get chased back into the pen, and Miss Laid about to get treats.
The generic term for australorps is ninjas or "a flock of ninjas". They see your fence and they admire the effort it took to build it. But they want to see it from all sides to make sure it's up to the required standard.
Our chicken "Carson with a K" just snitched on the other chickens!
SWIM was hanging up laundry and had not fully closed the gate of the birds' day run.
Karson came up, clucked and wiggled to tell SWIM that the others were now out and about behind the house.
The snitch got some bugs as a reward (stitches for humans only) as the rest were lured back in with bugs, .
The oldest chicken arrived here 11 years ago today. I think she might be the chick on the left, her eyes/pupils have always been a bit different.
Previous post.
As Spring approaches, the hens begin to lay -- even the Americauna. Something about this gives me hope that things will get better here.

We have a dozen eggs from backyard chickens, from someone who we are helping keep bees, and I'm thinking I need to get a specially designed bank safe installed for egg storage #eggs #backyardchickens

This was way back from Feb (cold as f), but it’s funny how much Ada HATES snow. She’ll fly right over it xD.
Grace just walks right through it no-shits-given, she’s such a cute lil boss. #BackyardChickens #BirdsOfMastodon
Good morning from Minneapolis, where we've clawed our way to Friday, as we do each and every week if we're lucky.
2025: 73 days in/292 out. "One Day at a Time."
It's 52℉ at the moment, heading for a high of 74℉.
Or, as our friends in the civilized world who use SI units would say, 23°C.
Barometer's falling. Rainy and snowy weather are on the way for the weekend.
We could use it. To paraphrase one of the Little Mermaid's aquatic sidekicks, Life's so much better / Here when it's wetter.
While walking borrowed dog Pepper the Australian kelpie this week, we happened upon some backyard chickens and their friendly yellow dog who came over to the fence to greet us.
Nice poultry operation here in the Longfellow neighborhood of Minneapolis.
Enjoy this pleasant spring weather. It'll be hotter 'n 'ell before we know it.
A large dog got into the day run of the chickens. We heard the ruckus and chased off the dog.
The chickens are stressed out but fine.
Because we don't clip their wings.
Works as a metaphor, too, if you feel like it, .

I don’t keep hard numbers because I’m just too sloppy and lazy but… I think it’s very situation specific. We have anywhere between four and six girls who free range on a quarter acre. So I don’t spend that much on feed because they’re busy eating other things. The coop was built mostly out of scrap wood lumber from other projects. Our girls lay when they feel like it and stop when they don’t (or run out of them). They live here till they die of natural causes. We’ve only lost one to a predator over the years. And we only eat their eggs. We never go buy grocery eggs. Plus, you have to factor in the entertainment value, the tilling, the fertilizer. The truth is that no matter how expensive store bought eggs become, they will still be cheaper than having chickens.
