Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner's call to strip a local movie theater's funding and lease over showing the film "No Other Land" is just the latest #authoritarian example of how the U.S. government is attempting to censor criticism of Israel.

"Mayor Meiner has now introduced a resolution that, if passed, would revoke local art house movie theater O Cinema’s lease and withdraw more than $40,000 in city grant funding. The resolution is being introduced this week at the Miami Beach City Commission meeting for a vote. Opposition has been fierce, and it is coming from different perspectives. While all those opposing the resolution rightly describe it as anti-democratic, unconstitutional, and a violation of free speech, some of those same people are condemning the movie and even calling it antisemitic. At this moment, we believe that it is crucial for groups in #SouthFlorida fighting for #Palestinian justice to be able to say loudly and firmly that this censorship reflects the City’s anti-Palestinian climate and history that we have been resisting at every opportunity. "

Mayor Steven Meiner has introduced a resolution that city commissioners will discuss during their next meeting on Wednesday. “No Other Land” opened last Friday at O Cinema, located at the Miami Beach Historic City Hall. Meiner had reached out several days before the premiere to convince O Cinema CEO Vivian Marthell not to show the film. Marthell initially agreed not to screen the movie in a response to Meiner, but then the showing went on as scheduled. Marthell didn’t immediately respond Thursday to an email seeking comment.

On March 5, Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner sent a strongly worded letter to O Cinema, an independent film cinema located in South Beach. He asks its CEO, Vivian Marthell, to remove the film “No Other Land,” which is scheduled to premiere Friday night at 7pm and has showings through next week.

But, despite pressure from Meiner, the South Beach theater has decided to move forward and run the film, which won an Academy Award early this week but has generated widespread criticism in Israel and from Jewish groups. The controversial film has secured only limited screenings in the United States despite its high-praise from film critics and viewers."
