"HELLO AGAIN"

Hello Again
from Cars [Signature Sounds] by Kris Delmhorst

It has been awhile since I listened to this album straight through - individual tracks mode is the thing at the moment - but "Hello Again" may very well be my favorite.

Kris Delmhorst album, "Cars" - tuned for synchro sounds

It is evident that "Cars" is a project she really wanted to do and it resulted in my personal favorite Kris Delmhorst album.

For a few more posts having to do with Kris Delmhorst, follow Mastodon's krisdelmhorst hashtag. A little more about KD's "Cars" album appears in my "Shake It Up" post.

NATIONAL RECORDING REGISTRY 2024
Mastodon Post

Library of Congress

National Recording Registry Inducts Sounds of ABBA, Blondie, The Cars, The Chicks, Juan Gabriel, Green Day, The Notorious B.I.G. and Lily Tomlin
Release Date: 16 Apr 2024

newsroom.loc.gov/news/national

This year's inductees include some highly notable recordings. My decision to post this was based in large part on it including one of my own all-time favorite recordings, the debut eponymous album by The Cars. “Rocket ‘88’” by Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats was not only one of the key records in rock 'n' roll history but it was also the introduction for most of us to Ike Turner. The Library of Congress can't do everything at once; but it is still surprising that "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" by Gene Autry wasn't already in the registry. Then there's "Pieces of Africa" by the Kronos Quartet. This list reminds me to look into Bill Withers.

Each of us might quibble over an entry or two; but overall, this is a very impressive list.

Shake It Up
from Cars by Kris Delmhorst

krisdelmhorst.bandcamp.com/tra

"Shake It Up" is one of the best tracks from the Kris Delmhorst album, "Cars" - tuned, lubed, and ready to cruise.

Cars
by Kris Delmhorst

Most of the "Cars" album takes place at the spot where interpretation meets faithful covers. It features the original arrangements and the same or similar instrumental lines as on the recordings by The Cars. It differs from the original records by centering on female vocals and by playing familiar Cars riffs on different instruments. Dinty Child, for instance, revs it up on rhythm tubes, while Zack Hickman puts pedal to the metal on such instruments as peckhorn and stylophone. Greg Hawkes, an actual Car, steps in on ukulele.

Delmhorst is among our best singer-songwriters; but if I could have only one of her full-length releases, it would be “Cars.” It is evident that this is a project she really wanted to do and she produced an excellent album.

JOELLE LURIE
"JUST WHAT I NEEDED"

Just What I Needed
from Take Me There by Joelle Lurie

joellelurie.bandcamp.com/track

One of my sub-projects in the past was to find good interpretations and covers of "Just What I Needed" by The Cars. This rendition by Joelle Lurie is among the better ones. I like what she did when she switched the gender perspective of the lyrics.

"SUSS"
"SALT"
Mastodon Post

Salt
from Ghost Box (Expanded) by SUSS

suss.bandcamp.com/track/salt-2

One or, I think, two members of SUSS were in a New Wave / Western band, Rubber Rodeo, out of Providence, Rhode Island. "New wave," in this instance, has more to do with The Cars, as one terrific example, and less to do with what 1980s/MTV kids call "new wave." Rubber Rodeo was quite good and it had a hit single, "The Hardest Thing."

SUSS takes the ambient country/western idea to completion. I have only heard "Ghost Box: Expanded." "Salt" is one of my favorite tracks.
