On 8 April 1933 the Main Office for Press and Propaganda of the German Student Union proclaimed a nationwide "Action against the Un-German Spirit", which was to climax in a literary purge or "cleansing" ("Säuberung") by fire. The destruction of "Left", democratic, and Jewish literature took precedence over everything else.

A quotation from Erich Kastner

The events from 1933 to 1945 should have been fought in 1928 at the latest. Later it was too late. We must not wait until the struggle for freedom is called treason. We must not wait until the snowball has turned into an avalanche, we must crush the rolling snowball. Nobody can stop the avalanche! It only comes to rest when it has buried everything underneath it.
That is the lesson, that is the conclusion of what happened to us in 1933, that is the conclusion we must draw from our experiences, and it is the conclusion of my speech. Impending dictatorships can only be fought before they have taken power. It is a matter of an appointment calendar, not heroism.

Quebec library straddling the US-Canada border for 121 years inspires childish behaviour from moronic U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, who "walked in through that front door on the American side and stepped back and forth across the border tape on the library floor, while repeating Donald Trump's trademark taunts: “U.S.A. No. 1,” and, Canada “the 51st state.”" #kristinoemisanazi #childish #MAGA #bookburning #library #Canada thestar.com/politics/political

Toronto Star · Martin Regg Cohn: Donald Trump’s America throws the book at a symbol of cross-border friendshipBy Martin Regg Cohn

Today I happened to be at the memorial to the #bookburning. I overheard something interesting from the guide of some tour group. The window to the empty #library has two reasons: 1. the #books should not be replaced, the library should not be replenished. The shelves remain empty. What has happened cannot be undone, at most it can be prevented from happening again. 2. everyone should be able to see their own reflection when looking into the empty room - what would I have done?

The photo in this image is of Nazis plundering the library of Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld, Director of the Institute for Sexual Research in Berlin. Hershfield and colleagues formed The Scientific-Humanitarian Committee, in 1897, to campaign for the rights of LGBT people. It was the first LGBT rights organization in history. Hershfield was an outspoken advocate for the rights of gender and sexual minorities. The committee was based in Hershfield’s Institute for Sexual Sciences until the Nazis destroyed the institute in 1933. The committee provided legal support for people being charged under Germany’s anti-sodomy laws and lobbied to abolish the laws entirely. Albert Einstein, Herman Hesse, Thomas Mann, and Tolstoy all signed their petitions. The Institute for Sexual Sciences provided some of the first gender-affirming care in the world.

The #internetarchive has been under pressure in the last years. Now with #ElonMusk ‘s blitzkrieg on federal departments, it makes me paranoid that this great archive needs to have a mirror somewhere off of American soil where #MAGA can’t seize and destroy it. All kinds of data need a safe place to live, not just the stuff they like.
